Investor learning about analyst predictive ability
نویسندگان
چکیده
Bayesian learning implies decreasing weights on prior beliefs and increasing weights on the accuracy of the analyst’s past forecast record, as the number of forecast errors comprising her forecast record (its length) increases. Consistent with this model of investor learning, empirical tests show that investors’ reactions to forecast news are increasing in the product of the accuracy and length of analysts’ forecast records. Moreover, the Bayesian learning predicted by our model is more descriptive of investor reactions than is a static model which predicts that investors’ responses condition only on the prior accuracy of the analyst. r 2004 Elsevier B.V. What Do Analysts Do ? Investor Decision and the Analyst Remuneration Mode
This paper questions the interaction between security analysts and institutional investors. We focus particularly on the role of analyst remuneration mode in investor decision. To do so, we propose a model in which the investor decides to trade or not to trade regarding the analyst recommendation. First, with a commission-based salary, the analyst is interested in the volume of transactions. Th...
متن کاملHow Rational is the Stock Market towards Properties of Analyst Consensus Forecasts?
This paper investigates the extent to which investors are rational with respect to two well-known empirical properties of analyst consensus forecasts: optimism and autocorrelated revisions. Consistent with previous research, I find that investors are aware of the optimistic bias in analyst forecasts, but do not adjust for it completely. Using Mishkin’s test, I find that the market’s expectation...
متن کاملDP2012-13 (Revised)
This paper examines the differences in accrual-based and real earnings management across countries from the perspective of investor protection. Following prior research (Leuz et al., 2003), we hypothesize that accrual-based earnings management is more constrained by strict discipline in countries with stronger investor protection. For real earnings management in countries with stronger investor...
متن کاملDoes market learning explain the disappearance of the accrual anomaly
In this study, I investigate whether market learning explains the absence of the accrual anomaly in recent years by examining three conditions associated with the presence of the anomaly in prior research: (i) a differential relation between future earnings and cash flows versus accruals, (ii) incorrect weighting of cash flows and accruals by investors when predicting earnings, and (iii) associ...
متن کاملInvestor Relations and Regulation FD
We examine the differential impact of Regulation Fair Disclosure (Reg FD) on firms with an established professional investor relations (IR) presence at the time of the regulation. About 25% of publicly listed firms employ a professional IR member yet we know relatively little about the role of IR. We find IR firms more than double their level of public disclosure post-Reg FD consistent with Reg...
